Having Problems to get the correct Adsense Ads?

Friday 22 June 2007 @ 10:29 am

One of the most common problems people have with Adsense is that the “correct” ads wont show up.

Exampel, You have a site focused on dogs, and the adsense ads show ads for travel.

There are many factors that can be the cause and I’ll share some of them with you here,

  • The Goggle Adsense spider and background system haven’t really crunshed your site (page) yet and is showing a rough estimate and guess (often quite lost).
  • You have to much unrelated content on your pages
  • You have a completely unrelated domain name (and possibly page names)

Proof!

Here’s proof that the last point is more important then most people think.

I made a test with this blog (http://www.gurusay.com/blog) and created a subdomain (this is recommended by many to make things look better. Not only for blogs but for products as well. I do this a lot as you have seen, ex. http://cashforcontent.gurusay.com/)

Now look closely on all Adsense Ads on this image!

Adsense Ads not showing the correct ads

These are the ads shown when the url to the page is,

blog.gurusay.com

Here’s the next image (both snapshots taken with only 10 seconds between them, the only difference is the url).

Adsense Ads showing the correct ads

The url for this image is,

www.gurusay.com/blog

Dramatic Difference

As my domain name is generic (gurusay.com) and has no hints towards the content of the site, the inclusion of a subdomain called blog. guided Goggle Adsense to focus on mainly blog ads. I actually had this subdomain live for over 3 days and I did extensive keyword stuffing to the blog and html code to force Adsense into showing more focused ads. But without any luck.

The www.gurusay.com/blog url directly produced correct ads, telling me that when the url is into a directory and the domain is generic, Google Adsense took more notice to the content of the blog (page) and less to the url itself.

Other Experiments

I have tried this with a completely new domain with the domain namethat is built from highly focused keywords. And when the domain name had good keywords from the sites theme, the ads shown by Adsense were the same with a subdomain called blog and a directory called blog.

Watch Out!

So if you have generic domain names, or non focused domain names you may end up with very unfocused ads when you use incorrect (not theme related) subdomains.

Also using directory and file (page) names with keywords is of help.

This can save you tens, hundreds, yes even thousands of $ per month from Adsense thanks to showing the high paying ads instead of ads that are completely unrelated.

So keep and eye on your ads and make sure they go with the content of the page (and I’m not talking about the layout, size, color or placement here).
